Columbiana County Educational Service Center Observes National Developmental Disability Awareness Month

(Lisbon, Ohio) During the month of March, the Columbiana County Educational Service Center (CCESC) based in Lisbon, Ohio proudly recognizes individuals that have developmental disabilities, classrooms that provide education to help prepare students for the workforce, and community businesses that partner with our agency. In 1987, President Ronald Reagan urged Americans to provide individuals with developmental disabilities “the encouragement and opportunities they need to lead productive lives and to achieve their full potential …” We recognize that all people who want to work should be able to do so and if needed, have access to necessary resources and support to assist them in becoming an important part of the workforce.
The CCESC boasts a successful work-related transition department known as ESC Work Solutions. This department provides employment services for both Mahoning and Columbiana Training Association (MCTA) and Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD). Our agency partners with local businesses to provide successful training opportunities for students and clients alike.
One of the many ways the Educational Service Center addresses this issue is by providing programming through “Reach for the STARS,” which is both a gift shop and training program for students with disabilities located in Salem, Ohio. Students work in the store and learn how to run a successful business. They learn how to maintain the store's cleanliness, how to count and restock inventory, plan and set up for special events, plan and decorate the store's display windows, wait on customers and much more.
