TESOL

world

The importance of TESOL, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, is becoming more and more prevalent as non native speakers of English decide to make the United States their home. The immigration population has seen a major increase during the past few decades, and school districts in Columbiana County have seen an influx in enrollment of non native speakers in their school districts, especially within the past five years.

This website will serve to provide important information for districts and teachers that will  help school districts have a better understanding of English language learners, and will also include instructional strategies for teachers that will help students during the transition as they become accustomed to their new classroom environment. Please keep in mind that even though a student may have excellent fluency in speaking English socially, they are still catching up academically. It takes 5-8 years for an English language learner to reach the same academic level as their American peers.

It is important to remember that not only are these students learning a new language, they are learning a new culture as well. Please feel free to contact Kim Mayer at kmayer@ccesc.k12.oh.us with any specific questions regarding English language learners.
